Student Electives
Third and Fourth year students
from ACGME approved schools are welcome to apply for clerkships in our program.
The requirements are outlined on the Student Elective Application.
The Family Medicine Residency Program offers the following student electives
in conjunction with the Baton Rouge General's Office of Graduate Medical
Education:

I. |
Title: |
Family Medicine Outpatient Preceptorship |
Length of Time: |
2 - 4 Weeks |
Rotation Supervisor: |
Derek Anderson, MD - Faculty |
Description: |
During this rotation, the senior student independently
evaluates outpatients at the Family Health Center (FHC), and presents
them to faculty members or senior resident's that they are paired
with. Educational opportunities also include participation in Outpatient
Teaching Rounds, Morning Report and our Thursday Teaching Afternoon. |
Objectives:
1. |
Experience in evaluating and managing the
common problems and procedures seen in a mid-city family practice
office, with emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach used
in the FHC. |
2. |
Skill in communicating effectively with patients,
staff, faculty and consultants. |
3. |
An awareness of community resources that
will assist in the Family Physician's role of case manager. |
4. |
Experience in self-directed learning utilizing
resources including Medical Informatics available at the FHC. |
5. |
Introduction to Practice Management issues
such as proper coding, billing and office management. |
Expectations for Honors:
We expect this candidate to further distinguish his or herself by
completing a short term project during the block. Past projects
have taken the form of a literature review and case presentation,
a health promotion/disease prevention research topic, or a Quality
Improvement/Practice Management project e.g. "The Care of Asthma
Patients at the FHC". Other project suggestions include writing
patient education material, video taping a patient encounter or
participating in a family counseling session.
Evaluation Process:
The rotation supervisor will conduct an end of the rotation feedback
and evaluation session which will include a review of the clerkship
evaluation forms that residents, faculty and outside preceptors
have returned. |

II. |
Title: |
Health Promotion/Disease Prevention
(HP/DP) |
Length of Time: |
2 - 4 Weeks |
Rotation Supervisor: |
Rob Chasuk, MD - Faculty |
Description: |
An elective where approximately half
the time will be spent seeing patients in the Family Health Center
(FHC). The other time will be focused on an HP/DP research project.
Some examples of ongoing projects include early literacy interventions,
adult literacy, patient education interventions in Congestive Heart
Failure and in Asthma. |

The rotation supervisor will conduct an end of the rotation feedback
and evaluation session. |

III. |
Title: |
Geriatrics/Gerontology |
Length of Time: |
2 - 4 Weeks |

Description: |
This elective is based primarily in
geriatrics facilities. This includes experience with primary care
of the elderly, in nursing home and skilled nursing care. The geriatric
experience also includes seeing patients at the Family Health Center. |

and evaluation session. |

IV. |
Title: |
Family Medicine Inpatient Rotation |
Length of Time: |
2 - 4 Weeks |

Rotating FP Faculty |
Description: |
This rotation consists of a predominant
inpatient experience for the senior student. They follow patients
admitted to the Baton Rouge General Medical Center , Mid City and
Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Bluebonnet under the supervision
of the senior resident and rotating FP faculty member. The students
attend and actively participate in Morning Report. They are also assigned
two, half-days/week to see patients in the Family Health Center, precepted
by a faculty member that they are paired with. |

Title: |
Clinical Problem Solving |

Description: |
Outpatient rotation utilizing
the problems presented by patients in a Family Medicine setting to
develop skills in recognizing and defining uncertainty and accessing,
appraising and appropriately applying information in the solution
of these problems. Activities include:
1. |
Direct patient care in the Family Health
Center and attendance at morning report and outpatient rounds
from which clinical problems are identified. |
2. |
Seeking solutions to those problems through
use of available information sources both electronic and otherwise. |
3. |
Using worksheets to critically appraise the
information found. |
4. |
Summarizing the application of this information
to patients' problems in written "critically appraised topics". |
5. |
Presenting these topics at morning report
or outpatients rounds. |
