Medical Education at Baton Rouge General—a brief history

More than 20 years ago, Baton Rouge General embarked on a long-term strategic planning process for the future. The plan included the development of graduate medical education as a major strategic goal in addressing the community’s need for more primary care practitioners.

In the early 90s, a task force was formed to guide the process of establishing the Family Medicine Residency Program. In 1993, Baton Rouge General became a member of the Council on Teaching Hospitals (COTH), one of only five private hospitals in Louisiana, and the only one in Baton Rouge, to be selected for this prestigious recognition. And in 1995, the inaugural class began their training at Baton Rouge General.

Since its inception, the Family Medicine Residency Program has strived to provide the latest medical technology and a continuing commitment to graduate medical education to the residents who choose to practice medicine at Baton Rouge General.
